Anticipation begins to build for Lucas Oil Speedway's 6th annual Big Buck 50

By Lyndal Scranton (Wheatland, MO) -- Along with the regulars who are fighting for points in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Street Stocks division, there could be some intriguing visitors over the final month of the regular season to Lucas Oil Speedway.

Street Stock drivers throughout the region already are starting to focus on the 6th annual Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt, set for Oct. 3-5. The $10,000-to-win event is sure to draw a stellar field from several states.

In fact, a couple of hard-hitting out-of-state drivers dropped in two weeks ago to tune up for the Big Buck 50. Kyle Slader of Muskogee, Oklahoma, and 2017 Big Buck 50 winner Tony Anglin of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, finished 1-2 in the July 14 O'Reilly Auto Parts Street Stocks 30-lap feature which was a part of the CMH Diamond Nationals.

"We were using tonight as a test session for the Big Buck 50 and it went as well as it could," Slader said after the victory.

This Saturday night offers the Street Stock competitors a chance to run for extra money with $750-to-win the 25-lap feature. It's the headliner on the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series program on Ozarks Food Harvest Food Drive Night at the Races. Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05.

Points will become important for the Street Stocks as Lucas Oil Speedway will award provisionals to the Big Buck 50 starting lineup to the two highest-finishing Street Stock drivers in track points who don't otherwise qualify for the race.

Format for the Big Buck 50 will find practice and time trials on Thursday, Oct. 3; qualifying heat races, along with a full Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Model program on Oct. 4; last-chance qualifiers before the main event, plus a full ULMA Late Model program on Oct. 5.

The 2017 Big Buck 50 drew 96 entries. Last year's even was canceled due to poor weather. Entry fee is $100 is received before Oct. 1 and $125 after.

The winning driver also will receive a free entry (valued at $3,000) into the prestigious mid-Missouri Whitetail Trophy Hunt, Nov. 16-18. The hunt is limited to 230 people and has been sold out since last December. The hunt winner will earn $15,000 so, potentially, the Big Buck 50 winner could make a gigantic haul. Plus, the five year Show-me Showdown is in its last year for the 2019 hunt. This promotion will provide an additional cash bonus prize fund that can go up to $55,000.

Over $4.5 million in cash and prizes has been awarded over 30 years to many fortunate whitetail hunters over the years. Visit WhiteTail.net for more info.

Whitetail Trophy Hunt owner Craig Danuser is a long-time supporter of area racing and said the goal, when he partnered with Lucas Oil Speedway, was to make the Big Buck 50 one of the biggest Street Stock races in the country.

"I think that Lucas Oil Speedway is the nicest place that I've ever been to," Danuser said. "If you're going to have one of the biggest Street Stock races in the United States, it needs to be at the nicest race track."

Danuser said the Street Stock division appeals to him because fans can easily identify with the cars.

"They look like regular cars," he said of the body styles. "That Street Stock might have started out as a Camaro or a Monte Carlo. People can identify with them."
