8th annual Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps Open Wheel Showdown returns to Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday
By Lyndal Scranton (Wheatland, MO) -- Lucas Oil Speedway plays host to its first big open-wheel show of the 2019 season on Saturday with a triple header on tap at the 8th annual Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps Open Wheel Showdown.
The RacinBoys ASCS Warrior Region Winged Sprint Cars Presented by Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps will be on the program along with the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Red River Region Presented by Smiley's Racing Products for a combined Winged program. Non-winged divisions will find the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprints and the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League.

Among those competing will be Wesley Smith of Nixa, Missouri. Smith, for the Helm Racing team, is leading the POWRi WAR Sprint points in the early going of the 2019 national tour. The 20-year-old will be pulling double duty, also competing in the POWRi National Midget League.
"This cuts our shortest travel time in half," Smith said of racing an hour away from home, compared to the norm of following the POWRi Series. "The facility is the best we'll race at all year and that's an added bonus.
"In the sprint car, we usually seem to do pretty good there. We're gonna have both cars there and run both features, hopefully."
Smith got his start in racing at the age of four in go-karts. He's driven "all kinds of stuff," including Legends and B-Mods over the years.
"We definitely want to chase WAR points as much as we can," Smith said of his 2019 goals. "The Midget, we're gonna fill in and not run for points as much but maybe make some of the bigger shows and the marquee events for that."
Coming into this weekend, Smith is five points ahead of Mario Clouser of Auburn, Illinois in the points race. Riley Kreisel of Warsaw, Missouri is eight out of the lead and Korey Weyant of Springfield, Illinois trails by 11.
Last year's event saw Mitchell Moore capture the POWRi WAR Sprints feature win. Other feature winners on the program, which saw 108 open-wheel cars check into the pits, were Logan Seavey (ASCS Winged Sprints) and Tanner Carrick (POWRi National Midget League). Seavey nearly pulled off a double, finishing second to Carrick.
Gates will open at 4 p.m. Saturday with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05.
