Fennewald triumphs at Lucas Oil Speedway

By Lyndal Scranton (Wheatland, MO) -- Johnny Fennewald prevailed in a tight battle with Eric Turner and picked up the featured Pitts Homes USRA Modified victory Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Fennewald, of Appleton City, Mo., earned $1,000 for the 25-lap victory as the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series returned after a three-week break.

Other feature winners in a program Presented by Networks of Mid-Missouri included Toby Ott (Big O Tires Street Stocks), Aaron Poe (Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Models) and Andy Bryant (Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods).

Fennewald regained the lead form Turner on lap six, after Turner had passed him coming out of turn four for the lead a lap earlier. Fennewald was checking out on the field, building nearly a straightaway-margin lead, when a caution on lap 14 bunched the field.

The two leaders broke away to make it a two-car battle for the lead with Turner looking for a way around Fennewald the rest of thew way. But Turner was unable to get past and Fennewald celebrated his first feature victory of the season - at least in a Modified.

Fennewald, doing double driving duty, has one win this season at Lucas Oil Speedway in a ULMA Late Model.

"I'll tell you what, it's been a while since I've been in a Modified and it takes one heck of a driving transition," Fennewald said. "I want it to drive like a Late Model and it won't. I'm kind of winded. These things wear me out.

"I want to thank Wes Summers. It's his new Longhorn chassis. I have to give a big thanks to Mikey Bryant, Mitch Keeter and Kyle Strickler. They're really a big help to me and good buddies, all three of them. I can't thank them enough."

Chase Domer wound up third with three-time reigning track champion Jeff Cutshaw in fourth.

Ott earns 2nd Street Stocks win: Toby Ott of Wheatland led all 20 laps for the Big O Tires Street Stocks feature victory, though it was far from a comfortable wire-to-wire drive to victory lane.

James Flood was on Ott's back bumper when a caution flew after Tim Petty's motor erupted into flames, leaving a five-lap shootout for the win.

Ott was up to the task, holding on for his second feature victory of the season after more than a decade of chasing his first win at his hometown track.

"I'm very excited," Ott said. "I got the first time a couple of weeks ago and I didn't expect to be back this quick, but I'm sure glad I am.

"I knew if I made a mistake, (Flood) was going to capitalize. I just had to hit my marks and was able to do that. Thankfully, the good Lord blessed me tonight."

Johnny Coats finished third with Kenny Carroll fourth.

Poe prevails in ULMA Late Models: Warrensburg's Aaron Poe took the lead with nine laps remaining and picked up his first career Lucas Oil Speedway feature victory, prevailing in the Warsaw Marine & RV Late Model main event.

Poe, driving No. 45 as a tribute to the late Allen "Cowboy" Chancellor who owned and operated the Lucas Oil MLRA for many year, was jubilant in victory lane in dedicating the win to Chancellor. He thanked Cowboy's widow Harriet Chancellor for the motor and car, saying "she gave us this opportunity."

"I couldn't ask for a better night," Poe said. "The track was a little heavy and we didn't think that was going to be to our liking, but it was."

Jon Binning, also of Warresnburg, was second with Johnny Fennewald third and Aaron Marrant in fourth.

Sixteen-year-old Kaeden Cornell was battling Binning for the lead when he quickly pulled off the track with mechanical issues on lap nine.

Poe drove past Binning and into the lead on lap 11 and had built a sizeable lead when the race's fifth caution, on lap 15, wiped out the margin. Bob Cummings smacked the wall hard entering turn three, but Cummings was not injured.

But Poe was not deterred, pulling away for the win by about a half straightaway.

Bryant breaks through in B-Mods: Andy Bryant of Fort Scott, Kan., took over after an early back-and-forth battle with Shawn Strong and went on to capture his first Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod feature of the season.

Bryant and Strong traded the lead four times over the first eight laps before Bryant went in front on lap eight and never surrendered it. Strong, seeking his second feature win of the season, finished second.

"About lap I started seeing lapped cars and I knew if we caught those, they'd either be on the bottom or I'd be able to get around them easily," Bryant said. "One of them, I got a little too close to. But I managed to pull away from them and get a win."

Bryant continued a solid season that includes two second-place finishes and a third in four Lucas Oil Speedway starts.

Sam Petty wound up third with Rex Merritt in fourth.
