Big weekend at Lake Lucas and Lucas Oil Speedway

By Lyndal Scranton (Wheatland, MO) -- Lucas Oil Speedway plays host to one of its biggest weekends of the season, with high-speed action on both water and dirt coming up.

The 6th annual John Haas Memorial Drag Boat Classic, featuring Top Fuel Hydros that roar in excess of 250 miles-per-hour, begins a three-day run Friday on "Lake Lucas." On Saturday, it'll be a doubleheader day with the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series on the dirt track in the evening.

"This is one of those weekends where fans get that rare opportunity to combine two forms of racing," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Dan Robinson said. "And remember, the admission to the John Haas Memorial Drag Boat Classic on Saturday, plus three-day drag-boat passes, includes admission to the dirt-track races."

Robinson also noted that admission to the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series event on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - with qualifying runs each day before finals on Sunday - includes the pit area.

The boat action will include five pro classes - Top Fuel Hydro, Top Alcohol Hydro, Top Alcohol Flat, Pro Modified and Pro Outlaw. Sportsman classes include Pro Eliminator, Top Eliminator, Modified Eliminator and Stock Eliminator. Bracket classes are River Racer, Personal Watercraft and Personal Watercraft 2.

In the featured Top Fuel Hydro, the Tommy Thompson-owned Nitrochondriac, driven by Bryan Sanders, is off to a great start in defending the series championship. Nitrochondriac has won both events this season. Sanders, the reigning Haas Memorial winner, clicked off a 270.38 mph run earlier this season in Parker, Ariz.

"Wheatland is the premier track on the circuit," Sanders said. "Forrest Lucas did a great job building that place and we love going there."

Other leaders in the pro divisions in 2017 are: Top Alcohol Hydro - Mike DeClark in Little White Lie; Top Alcohol Flat - Tony Scarlata in Shazam; Pro Modified - Shawn Reed in Top Secret and Pro Outlaw - Vic Esposito in Freak Show.

On the dirt track Saturday night, The Networks of Mid-Missouri Present the Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series featuring the Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Models, the Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds, the Big O Tires Street Stocks and the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods. The Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds will take center stage on the evening with a 25-lap, $1,000-to-win feature.

With just two events remaining before the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series Midseason Championships on June 29, division leaders are Jeff Cutshaw (Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds), Aaron Marrant (Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Models), Toby Ott (Big O Tires Street Stocks) and Kris Jackson (Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods).

On the midway before Saturday night's races, Dennis Treece, author of "The True Story of Curtis Turner," will be doing a book signing.
