Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (June 15, 2015) – Johnny Herrera started the Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek off on the right foot Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

Herrera rebounded from an opening-lap melee during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour main event to post a runner-up result, which gave him the lead in the championship standings.

“On the first lap I had to make some evasive moves to keep from getting into some guys,” said Herrera, who advanced from fifth to third place in a heat race to start the main event 10th.

“It was a cluster in turn one at the start of the race and I slid off the track. By the time I got back on the track I was running 18th. We ran a good stint and I got back up to 10th.”

Herrera took advantage of a restart to rocket into the top five. He then methodically advanced into second place.

“Once we got to second Wayne Johnson had a good lead on us,” he said. “I never closed enough of the gap to contend for the win.”

Herrera attributed the podium finish to changes made to the engine last week.

“We sent the motor off to the engine builder and he made a cam change,” he said. “It was a big difference. It ran stellar all night.”

Mechanical woes slowed Herrera during the prior weekend, when he competed on June 6 at Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Okla., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Herrera moved from seventh to fifth place during a heat race to garner the final lock-in position into the main event. He then rallied from 16th to an eighth-place result during the feature.

“It wasn’t a bad night,” he said. “We had motor issues the whole night that we fought from the week before. We didn’t start as far forward as we liked, but that’s still a good night for starting in the back. That’s what we look forward to is at least put ourselves in the top 10.”

Herrera will resume Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek action this Wednesday at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., Thursday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla., Friday at Salina Speedway in Salina, Kan., and Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.
