Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 29, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. registered a pair of podium results last weekend during the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.

Hafertepe Jr. finished third each night at the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader hosted by Lucas Oil Speedway. The results gave him four podiums in the last six races.

“It was definitely a successful weekend,” he said. “All in all, we had a really good weekend.”

The weekend opened on Friday with Hafertepe Jr. winning his heat race, which earned him a spot in the feature redraw.

“The first night we had a really good car,” he said. “We drew a 16 and it put us front row outside for the heat race. We had a couple of good guys in there. We got a really good start, won it and that put us in the redraw for the feature.”

Hafertepe Jr. then pulled the second-highest number – seven – to line up on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.

“We got up through there, but I used my tires up quite a bit,” he said. “We got up to fourth pretty quick. We probably could have done a little bit more if I didn’t run my tires so hard at the beginning.”

Hafertepe Jr. then passed Jeff Swindell on the final lap to earn the third-place finish. That also locked him into the feature redraw on Saturday, when Hafertepe Jr. pulled the No. 2 to start the main event on the outside of the front row.

“They wanted a top and a bottom groove,” he said. “They packed the bottom in before we got out there, but left the top unpacked and let us pack the top and didn’t give us enough time. When they dropped the green flag we got hung out to dry on the top. I fell back to seventh right away.”

Hafertepe Jr. quickly rebounded to rally inside the top five and he ended with a third-place result.

“We clicked them off one by one,” he said. “I got inside of (Derek) Hagar a few times for second. The cautions fell at the wrong time and we couldn’t make anything happen. I felt like we had a really good car, a consistent car. We just needed to get to the bottom faster.”

The two podium finishes also moved Hafertepe Jr. within striking distance of the leader in the ASCS National Tour championship standings. He is only 74 points out of the lead.

Hafertepe Jr. will take this weekend off before racing with the ASCS Lone Star Region on Oct. 11 at Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas.
